Hi Everyone,
Happy Monday! I don't know what the weather's like in your part of the country, but here in Virginia, the end of March is decidedly not like a lamb: it's in the 40s and rainy.
No matter -- there's some neat stuff going on that's making me forget the weather.
Firstly, last week the AOL Help team published some AOL Desktop FAQs. The team and I looked at all the member feedback submitted over the past few months, and we distilled and answered the most common questions in one convenient location.
Check out the AOL Desktop FAQs: http://help.channels.aol.com/topic.adp?topicId=ART_223666
Secondly, this past Wednesday we had our first Beta chat for "Nexus" (the codename for the next version of AOL Desktop). It included about 16 testers and 4 of us from the team, including me and our Beta, development, and quality assurance managers. We'll be holding another one next week around 4/9. I'll post more details a little closer to the time. You're welcome to join us to ask questions and share feedback.
I'll also be back to normal this week in terms of posting and responding to comments. I took a few days off last week.
More to come soon,
Cheers,
Laura
Laura Peterson is a Principal Product Manager in AOL Products and the lead product manager on the AOL Desktop software. She works with AOL Product Development, Product Design, Quality Assurance, AOL Beta, Marketing, and AOL Help to create, talk about, launch, and support the AOL software! She also responds to as much member feedback and questions as she can via email, IM, and, of course, the blog itself. Walking the hallways of AOL since 2003, her previous assignments include work on the AOL 9.0 Optimized toolbar, AOL's voice services products, and other software releases such as 9.0 VR and the first AOL Mail and AIM Gadget.
Doran Butuche is the lead product manager on Desktop Gadgets, those cool mini-applications that live in the Vista Sidebar, where he is responsible for product definition and management.
Summer is a Sr. Manager for AOL Member Communications. While she has no ties directly to the product development team, she has been a contributor to many AOL blogs over the last few years and is excited to bring a non-product team perspective to the Desktop blog.

1. After installing aol desktop version 10 the talk on my microsoft webcam no longer works in desktop or version 9.1 as a video chat. If I start a voice chat it works just fine.
I am running windows vista home premium. It is a Lifecam vx-3000 and was working fine up to the upgrade. the video is still working but not the built in mike.
Do I need to uninstall all versions of aol and the webcam and reinstall.
Desktop only lets you pick the camera and not the talk source.
Also I forgot how to pick the webcam in version 9.1.

2. Corgi11, you could try reinstalling the webcam and mic drivers(available from the manufacturer's website -- just search for the model number) and make sure the webcam and mic are both correctly selected in your sound and audio device properties in your OS control panel.

3. I was wondering if AOL Desktop will continue to be a "web based" version of AOL or go to the client server like all previous AOL versions, which I think is faster.

4. I want to say here that I enjoyed the Chat qwe had with Laura and the Developers and of corse us testers on March 26th! I also want to stress that more of these are really, really needed. Now---to put in my plug for publicizing these more! Both on the Blog and in Beta Central! Point in fact here.
The transcript of this chat was put up last Thursday through a link in Beta Central on the page that leads to the chat room. How many actually saw that? I did because I was waiting for it to be posted.
My point to all this is--keep up the special chats but Publicize them! If id doubt how---ask the Beta Staff!

5. I want to comment on the new chats with Laura, the Beta Staff and the Developers! These need to be MUCH more highly publicized in this blog, the Message Boards AND Beta Central. Our first chat was held March 26 and about a week later the transcript of it was posted on the page that has the link to the AOL Beta Chat room on it. This is all well and good! However, Both the chat and the transcripts should be much more peominently placed, given much more emphasis than they have been so far. These chats with AOL and Testers are a great way to improve the testing experience for both!!!

6. Last nights chat with Laura and her gang reminded me of days gone by in the Beta Chat Room; there was some lively discussion and some light hearted banter as well. Since the drastic cuts in beta staffing there has been a general lethargy on the part of many testers. I, for one, am still in a "wait and see" mode with where beta testing is going with AOL. What Laura is doing is helping me some some light, albeit dim at this point, at the end of the tunnel. Keeping my fingers crossed and looking forward to more testing.

8. Since downloading AOl desktop, most times I cannot sign in (the drop down sig in)therefore I cannot get my email. After logging in why does the screen disappear and comes back again? That is very annoying. I think those are the only issues I have with the latest version of AOL.
Please help!
